    The City of Brookfield has an excellent opportunity for an Accountant to join our Finance team. The Accountant role performs various accounting functions, including preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, billing, maintenance of the fixed asset inventory, and assisting with the preparation of various financial reports. Position also responds to requests for information from staff, elected officials, and the public.

    Job functions include:
    Assisting Utility Accountant with quarterly sewer/water billing, quarterly reports to Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District, and various financial and statistical reports for the Sewer and Water Board and for the Public Service Commission.
    Sewer/Water/Road special assessments and contemplated assessments.
    General billing invoices, including but not limited to delinquent utilities, special assessments, permits, water standby fees, false alarms and fire inspections. Monitors collection activity with follow up as needed.
    Assists with the generation of audit schedules in preparation for the annual external audit.
    Compile sales tax reports.
    Assists with file preparation and data validation for the annual budget.
    Assists with time-data entry of bi-weekly payroll processing. Assists Payroll Management Accountant with maintenance of the wage, benefits, and leave tables.
    Assists Payroll Management Accountant with payroll processing through check/advice generation and federal/state payroll filings
    Reconciles various general ledger accounts on monthly or quarterly basis.
    Assists Deputy Finance Director and Utility Accountant with oversight of bankruptcy cases impacting city collections and outstanding utility account balances.
    Reconciles payroll deduction accounts bi-weekly/ monthly as needed and prepare necessary journal entries.
    Prepares journal entries for departmental usage of office supplies, postage, gasoline, materials, copying, and other inter-departmental expenses.
    Answers attorney and title company inquiries and prepares special assessment letters for real estate closings.

    Minimum requirements include:
    1. Associate’s degree in Accounting or similar field.
    2. A minimum of three (3) years experience in accounting or administrative and office support experience, preferably in the public sector.
    3. Knowledge of computer software programs, including spreadsheets, word processing and databases.
    4. Knowledge of computerized accounting systems.

    The 2023 salary range is $27.32 – $31.24 per hour with excellent benefits.
