    Summary of Job

    The City of Verona is recruiting to fill a Utility Accountant vacancy. This is a part-time, benefited position scheduled to work approximately 24 hours per week. The Utility Accountant position performs a variety of accounting and analytical tasks in the administration/finance office. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining asset records, preparation and updating of spreadsheets, preparing journal entries, assisting with the annual utility and city audits, assisting with the tax collection process and lending support to the Finance Director as needed.

    Job Duties and Responsibilities

    Essential Job Functions:

    Provides assistance to independent auditors during annual audit process; Preparation of client working papers as needed;
    Assists in the preparation of the Water, Storm Water and Sewer Utility Operating and Capital Budgets;
    Assists with the tax collection process including recording and reconciling the utility tax roll and special assessments, receipting payments, reconciling tax collection transactions and maintaining and reconciling personal property tax accounts;
    Prepares monthly journal entries;
    Interfaces and reconciles utility transactions and posts to the general ledger on a monthly basis;
    Reconciles general ledger asset and liability accounts;
    Maintains general asset records, utility assets and continuing property records in compliance with PSC requirements and maintains City infrastructure asset records in accordance with GASB 34;
    Review revenue and expenditure accounts to verify accuracy of recorded data and compliance with budgets;
    Keeps abreast of PSC regulations, State Statutes and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

    Other Job Functions:

    Assists with special projects and preparation of reports;
    Acts as backup to the accounting assistant position;
    Other duties as assigned.


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Knowledge of budgetary, accounting and reporting systems;
    Knowledge of public finance and fiscal planning;
    Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices;
    Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality and make appropriate decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures, State Statutes, PSC regulations;
    Ability to maintain accounting and clerical records and prepare reports from such records;
    Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and accounting software and spreadsheets;
    Ability to maintain effective relationships with other employees, officials and the general public;
    Ability to perform general clerical and accounting functions with particular attention to detail;
    Ability to exercise good judgment with tact and courtesy;

    Education and Experience:
    Associate’s Degree in Accounting or a related field or a minimum of two years of accounting related experience is required. Bachelor’s Degree with a major in accounting or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred.

    Additional Information

    Work Conditions and Physical Requirements: Work is performed under general office conditions.

    Equipment Used in Performing Tasks: Computers, calculators, fax machines, adding machines, copiers, and postage machines.

    Position Reports To: The Accountant position reports to the Finance Director.
